brighton-based gritpop duo snake eyes are delighted to kick-start their 2025 with a bang as they return with searing new single ‘hug me’ set for release on 6th february 2025 via alcopop! records (row) and grand hotel van cleef (ger).
featuring guest vocals from erik heise of german punk chart toppers and touring buddies pabst, rollicking new single ‘hug me’ was produced by snake eyes and is another caustic slice of churning, gritty, guitar-fuelled pop from the band.
fresh from supporting rising uk punk duo the meffs, the new track comes ahead of an impressive run of uk/eu january/february 2025 live dates supporting australia’s dune rats, retiring icons you me at six on their storied farewell tour, and hastings punx kid kapichi.
the pair recently announced that they will be performing as a live duo for the foreseeable future, following the departure of bassist sophie douglas last year.
commenting on the new single, vocalist jim heffy says: “hug me is a song close to my heart. i was signed off of work with an anxiety disorder in late 2023 and it was one of the darkest periods of my life.”
“the medication made the anxiety much worse before it got any better, to the point i couldn’t face going to the shop let alone seeing friends. i barely left the house, i lost my job and was at total odds with myself for the best part of a year. it felt like my mind and body were 2 different entities with 2 different sets of needs and it felt almost impossible to keep both happy at the same time.”
“i wrote these words when i was trying to make sense of what had happened to me and what was next. it’s a song about recovery, love and empathy. at this point, i still have bad days. my recovery is very much a work in progress. if you suffer with anxiety or depression, we got you. ‘hug me’ is here to give you some positive energy. share the love ”
the track comes with an official video directed and filmed by the band, which parodies the verve’s iconic ‘bitter sweet symphony’ visuals. “‘bitter sweet symphony’ is one of the first music videos i remember seeing and being totally captivated by,” says drummer thomas coe-brooker. “i had the fun idea of a pastiche of it as a second scene for 'hug me'. instead of having a disregard for his surroundings jim is trying to share the love with his passers by… who have a disregard for him! there's a bunch of fun shot-for-shot references in there, see if you can pick em out.”
2024 was another bumper year for the ever-restless duo as they built on their ever-growing platform. their standalone climate change charity single ‘hottest day on record’ raised over £400 for music declares and greenpeace, with support from radio 1, radio x, spotify, clash magazine and more.
the band then followed up with uk tour dates supporting october drift and mouth culture, german tour dates with kettcar, and international festival appearances at down the rabbit hole, truck festival, 2000 trees, supersonic, left of the dial, and more.
snake eyes will be revealing further new music and live dates over the coming months.
