London-based singer and audiovisual artist Sky_A is pleased to reveal his sprawling and experimental new single ‘Old Boy’, set for release on 26th February 2025.
Incorporating darker elements of electronic production, crunching alternative rock, and progressive-folk, and packed with dynamic, melodic twists and turns, it’s a distorted and dystopian dive into the unique world around his music.
Commenting on the single, he says: “Oldboy is the first track on the album. It's like an overture, establishing the space and the themes of the record. It's been described as the soundtrack to an unmade film. An encounter on a bridge, a visitation. A troubled kid is given a mission, promised a hero's welcome. And then the theme comes in. Somewhere between Nick Drake and Faithless via Moderat, it's pretty experimental genre wise.”
The track is the latest to be taken from his forthcoming new album Labyrinths, set for release on 28th March 2025, and follows on from the aptly-titled lead single ‘Running Out Of Winter’ which dropped earlier this year.
Currently developing the 50-minute audiovisual album launch show that will debut on March 28th at The Bath House, Hackney in London, Sky_A says that audiences can anticipate an immersive experience where sound and sight converge. "You can expect to be taken into a world," he promises, “of beauty and oppressive force, where dynamic contrasts in music are mirrored by visuals that describe intangible forms and currents, infinite cities, energetic bodies.”
Avant-garde audiovisual artist and musician Sky_A is adept at weaving together disparate threads of storytelling, emotion, and soundscape. From his earliest days in a musically rich household, he has nurtured a passion for narrative—a quest to evoke emotion and transport his audience through the alchemy of sound and vision. "I like painting pictures in whatever medium, bringing an audience on a journey with me," he reflects.
Deriving his stage name from his birth name Sky Ainsbury, the Sky_A moniker speaks to a personal connection, but also describes the scope of his creative canvas, hinting at realms of imagination and parallel realities.
A Lumen Prize-shortlisted video artist currently touring live visuals for electronic musician Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes), Ainsbury has spent the past several years honing his own sonic universe that is equal parts dystopian electronica and folk-inflected, heavy progressive rock.
The title Labyrinths reflects an exploration of complexity, mirroring the intricate patterns of a city and the human psyche. Ainsbury's fascination with the micro and macro—how personal experiences resonate within larger societal frameworks—underscores the album's thematic depth. "Are we building tunnels, or are they bridges, or are they walls?" he asks, inviting listeners to consider the connections and barriers that shape their own lives.
Combining intimate songwriting with futuristic, cinematic production, and featuring the breathless math-rock chops of drummer Adam Betts (David Gilmour, Three Trapped Tigers, Squarepusher), the project is a journey into a troubled future, and has already drawn comparison with the likes of The Mars Volta, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, and Tool.
With full band rehearsals underway, the project is now ready for touring as a bombastic live A/V show, and Ainsbury will be announcing further live dates over the coming months.
New album Labyrinths is released 28th March 2025
