Muscle Memory is a DJ/production duo and a band. Comprised of Steven Reker and Michael Tapper, the duo blends their backgrounds in rock bands and live performances with their love for dance music, creating a unique blend of synthpop and danceable tunes. They are known for their work in the NYC indie and electronic scenes, including their DJ residency at Nightmoves and live shows.

Is Muscle Memory a band or a DJ/production duo? The answer is yes. Blurring the lines between live performance and the DJ booth, Muscle Memory is the brainchild of Steven Reker and Michael Tapper, two seasoned players from the NYC indie scene. Their shared love for Italo Disco, Post-Punk, and Chicago House led them to create a unique sonic blend equally at home in underground clubs and on festival stages.

Their latest offering, ‘Get Lost’—dropping January 17—is a shimmering piece of synthpop that dares to ask, “What if Fleetwood Mac was produced by Giorgio Moroder?” The single, backed by a spacey dub remix from disco revivalists Midnight Magic and an acid-tinged rework by the duo themselves, promises to make waves on dance floors and Spotify playlists alike.

Reker and Tapper first crossed paths as veterans of indie rock—Reker leading the avant-pop band People Get Ready and collaborating with David Byrne and Khruangbin, while Tapper toured the world drumming for We Are Scientists and Yellow Ostrich. Transitioning into electronic music, the pair found common ground in their DJ sets, eventually blending their live and studio sensibilities into Muscle Memory.

Now mainstays of the NYC club scene, they hold a monthly DJ residency at ‘Nightmoves’, the Brooklyn dance haven opened by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. Their energetic live shows, known for their synth-drenched sexy beats and danceable grooves, have garnered a loyal following.

Muscle Memory burst onto the scene in the summer of 2024 with ‘Taste of a Kiss’, a 12” single featuring remixes by Woolfy (DFA/Permanent Vacation) and the duo’s own extended dance mix. They followed up with ‘Body of Light’, an EP described as “Arthur Russell meets Italo Disco with Gang of Four on guitar,” and featuring a remix by legendary producer Justin Strauss.

With ‘Get Lost’, Muscle Memory continues to explore uncharted territory, merging nostalgic influences with forward-thinking production.

Beyond their own releases,  Muscle Memory has been busy remixing tracks for other artists while curating their roving party, ‘INFINITE BEAT (!)’, that seamlessly blends DJs and live music from their favorite corners of NYC nightlife. Their dynamic approach to music-making, whether through live shows or DJ sets, consistently transforms venues into immersive dance experiences.

Don’t miss Muscle Memory’s latest release, ‘Get Lost’, on vinyl and streaming platforms. Whether on stage or behind the decks, Reker and Tapper are redefining what it means to bridge the worlds of dance music and live performance.
