In this interview, Michael discusses his musical journey, influences, and the creative process behind his captivating sound.

Click Roll Boom: Tell me about how you got started:

Michael Webster: I started performing and writing songs around 12 years ago, when I lived in Scotland - it was a nice way to get away from the mundane of modern life!

CRB: How would you describe your sound, and how has it evolved since you first started?

MW: I think it’s best described as alternative-folk, lots of grunge, indie and folk influences in there; since I started it’s much more folky, especially in my guitarwork and songwriting style.

CRB: Who or what have been some of your biggest influences, musically and beyond?

MW: I think one of the biggest influences is Neil Young - his ability to write not just one genre of music is inspiring! Also bands like Built To Spill, Pavement, Nirvana, modern musicians like Phoebe Bridgers and Snail Mail, and even rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller give me inspiration to create.

CRB: What does your songwriting process typically look like – is it a more individual or collaborative effort?

MW: I usually come up with a chord progression or melody that I like, and then try and let the words naturally flow - it can take time, but sometimes it can pour out!

CRB: How do you approach experimenting with new sounds or ideas when creating music?

MW: I usually do this in the production stage of recording - I have a decent pedalboard from past bands that can create a lot of different sounds, and I really enjoy production, it’s fantastic to create something that works for the track - and I love a good bit of soundscaping.

CRB: What’s been one of the most memorable moments in your journey so far?

MW: When I performed for my EP launch at the end of 2022! It was mental to see so many people there, so many friendly faces singing along and enjoying my music.

CRB: How do you prepare for live shows, and what do you aim to bring to your performances?

MW: I often just go with the flow - I love a performance that’s got integrity and substance to it. A lot of the time I’ll pick songs to play that flow well together, but it’s always good to put a contrasting track on an acoustic or such to give a dynamic to the performance.

CRB: How do you balance creative expression with staying connected to your audience?

MW: I think it’s all about just being yourself. You can do the content and social media and fan connection along with writing authentic original material, but if you’re trying to be something you’re not, it won’t work.

CRB: What do you hope listeners take away from your work?

MW: The best thing that I’ve had is someone say that they were inspired to create something from listening to my music. To influence someone to create is an unbelievable feeling.
