ALBUM REVIEW: Tedeschi Trucks Band - I Am The Moon: II. Ascension
The second installment of a four-album set from a band with amazing musicianship. Each album's release is preceded by a different film premiere.
The concept behind I Am the Moon is the 12th century poem Layla and Majnun by Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. It also provided title inspiration for Eric Clapton's 1970 double-LP with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
They squeeze seven songs in this time. A shot of propulsive groove-rock shaded with funk beats and Latin accents. There’s some punchy reggae sounding like late-period Bob Marley-era Wailers. Some swamp blues, down and dirty. A nine minute jazz-tinged excursion with Spanish sounding guitar. A rootsy, soul-drenched Americana waltz. Gospel and ballads round out the package. You’ll hear up to three guitars in a piece, up to four percussionists, multiple vocalists, organ and brass yet it’s never crowded – though it is rich and warm.
This is an immersive sound and something capable of reaching all sorts of audiences; it is grown up music, outside genres and capable of winning attention from a wide spectrum of music-lovers.
I Am The Moon: II. Ascension is OUT NOW!
