The Velveteers have released their new album A Million Knives today via Easy Eye Sound. Complete with the band’s signature “monstrous sound” (Under The Radar) and “buzzing pile-driver” (SPIN) energy, the 13-song collection finds the Colorado trio – featuring tour-de-force frontwoman Demi Demitro on vocals and baritone guitar, backed by dual drummers Baby Pottersmith and Jonny Fig on a conjoined kit – pursuing rock n’ roll’s non-binary, queer and female-fronted future.

Demitro, “one of the most exciting frontpeople in rock n' roll” (Paste), penned A Million Knives with her bandmates after a particularly grueling stretch of life on the road, as a way to process feeling used and fed up in the face of vulnerability. The album examines the typically-unspoken tolls of navigating a system that’s often far from compassionate. The Valentine’s day release also fittingly “explores the different forms of heartbreak,” as Demitro recently described in a conversation with Billboard. Today, The Velveteers point to “Take It From The Top” – a song the trio says is “inspired by someone who desperately wants to be liked and loved but in turn is lonely in their pursuits of success.”

Previous advance tracks have included “On And On” – a rallying cry against rampant misogyny in the music industry – which was named a Song You Need To Know by Rolling Stone (among “best of” selections from Guitar World to GLAAD). “On And On” was followed by “Bound In Leather” – an ode to transcending one’s own confines – which earned The Velveteers a spot on the cover of the Zane Lowe-curated New Music Daily playlist at Apple Music.

On A Million Knives, The Velveteers collaborate with multi-time GRAMMY-winning producer and The Black Keys lead singer Dan Auerbach to spotlight their “high-energy scrappy attitude…Led Zeppelin-esque 70s psychedelia sound and fuzz tone” (as hometown alt-weekly, and longtime champions, Westword note). The album’s first single, “Go Fly Away,” marked the announcement on “a historic note” (Billboard), featuring a collaboration with Auerbach and Patrick Carney – the first time The Black Keys have produced together for another artist. “They just sound so powerful, they're amazing live, there's nothing like them,” says Auerbach.
