The Castros drop new track ’50 Pence’

“We need more throwbacks, simply because innovation often comes from re-considering the past. The Castro’s do exactly that, interpreting the contemporary through a vintage lense” — Mezmerised Magazine

Fresh from shows across the UK - from the famous Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow to festivals in Scotland & England - Scottish 5 piece ‘The Castros’ are set to release their latest addition to an energetic and ever growing catalogue - ’50 Pence’.

"50 Pence" comes from a place of raw emotion. It's about loving someone who's amazing despite the chaos that surrounds them, particularly the madness of their family members. The verses are dark, heavy with the weight of the family dynamic—each verse dedicated to a different family member with a brief description to paint the picture.

But then, the chorus brings in a contrast. The repetition of “You turn me on” allows it to be the stand out part of the song and it feels almost like a desperate search for something real, something to hold onto amidst all the brokenness. That brightness, that lift, is the relief we wanted to capture. It's not just physical; it’s the idea of a moment of clarity, a glimmer of hope, like the first breath after holding it in too long. The chorus gives you that moment of light, pulling you out of the dark.

Then, the bridge resolves everything. “You’re a breath of fresh air, not like the others” is the turning point, where the love the felt for the girl becomes clear—she’s the escape from the darkness, almost like she was worth all the hardship. It’s the softest part of the song, the moment of release and renewal, and it sums up everything we were trying to say. In the midst of all that dysfunction, she is the one thing that’s different, the one thing that’s real. It’s a love story built on finding light in the darkest places.

After a well deserved break over the holidays, The Castros are back in the studio and set to announce a run of shows & festivals across the UK in the coming weeks. More TBA!
