Suki Summer Returns with Poignant New Single ‘Marianne’
Rising singer/songwriter Suki Summer, known for her evocative fusion of gritty rock and 80’s synth, is back with her latest single, ‘Marianne’. This track showcases Suki’s ability to make music which is deeply personal whilst also being relatable. Exploring genres such as indie pop, dream pop and bedroom pop, Suki creates immersive soundscapes that offer a fresh, unapologetic voice in today’s pop-rock scene.
‘Marianne’ is an intimate exploration of vulnerability and fleeting connections, drawing on inspiration from Suki’s travels through Europe during the summer. Reflecting on a brief romance the song captures the exhilaration of a passionate but impermanent relationship.
‘This song explores my relationship with intimacy and vulnerability,’ shares Suki. ‘I wanted this song to encapsulate the time we spent together which was beautiful and fun but also tainted with a sadness of knowing that when the summer ended so would our time together. The name of the song and subsequently the hook of the chorus ‘Marianne’ I credit to him. He noted my likeness to Marianne from one of his favourite books 'Normal People’ by Sally Rooney and also pointed out my resemblance to the actress Daisy Edgar Jones who plays Marianne in the tv adaptation. I think it felt so perfect and so sad that our shared love of this book and story, in many ways, also mirrored our reality.’
The first verse is reflective reminiscing on Suki’s memories of the summer whilst the second verse explores her longing for an alternative outcome where they didn’t have to say goodbye. The bittersweet lyrics are brought to life by Suki’s raw and melancholic vocal performance, which came to life during an 8 hour studio session.
‘Recording this song was cathartic,’ Suki explains. ‘My recording engineer Neil helped bring out the vulnerability in my performance. The layered harmonies and the music by Basil encapsulate the romanticisation of a brief summer encounter; both capturing the feeling of a fun summer romance and the sadness of its end.’
With ‘Marianne’, Suki Summer continues to build on her reputation as a storyteller who isn’t afraid to reveal the softer, vulnerable parts of herself. The track is for anyone who has found themselves caught up in a summer romance that couldn’t last. ‘Despite our ending not being the happiest I am really grateful that we were able to share that chapter of time together,’ says Suki. ‘This song allowed me to explore my own vulnerability which I owe to this person’.
Reflecting on the release, Suki Summer shares, “Sometimes you meet someone and it’s like being able to finally hold onto the side of the pool after treading water for so long…”
