Songs on Repeat: March 2025

Here's a round up of the songs old and new we've been enjoying at Click Roll Boom HQ this month.

Amy:

This month has been the month I rediscovered more raw, grittier music and fell in love with Pirate Metal plus a spattering of pop and my usual punk mayhem! I love the fact my music taste is forever evolving and changing, it never sticks in one place long!

Alestorm - Chomp Chomp (2020)

Totally ridiculous, completely absurd and nonsensical Pirate Metal recounting a rather grizzly encounter with both an alligator and a crocodile!

“If you see an alligator

In your refrigerator

You better say see ya later

Or you might end up dead

They say you should never smile

Right at a crocodile

He'll drag you down into the deep

And eat your fucking head

Chomp chomp!”

Bishop Briggs - My Serotonin (2024)

Perfect edgy pop - it’s got enough accessibility for the mainstream and enough bite for anyone seeking something with a bit more gritty attitude. The whole of 2024’s “Tell My Therapist I’m Fine” is amazing, it deserved more attention than it got!

Alestorm - Voyage of the Dead Marauder (feat. Patty Gurdy) (2024)

Something a bit more serious from Alestorm but just as Piratey! The dual vocals between Chris Bowers and Patty Gurdy are sensational. His gruff tones work magnificently against her stunning, almost symphonic sounds.

Patty Gurdy - Peg Leg Silly-Billy (feat. Chris Bowers) (2024)

I discovered Patty through Alestorm and it was love at first listen. Her voice is stunning and she’s also introduced me to the fabulous sounds of the hurdy-gurdy, a stringed instrument played with a hand-cranked wheel. More pirate mayhem on display here, a silly song that begs to be sung in rounds with all your mates! Check out her 2024 album “Tavern” its incredible.

Orange Goblin - Save Me From Myself (2012)

Gritty, sludgy stoner rock with blues sensibilities. I was into Orange Goblin years ago but they fell off my radar, now they’re back and I’m loving their thick, swampy, textured sounds. Gutted they’re calling it a day after their 2025 tour is done.

The Beat - Twist & Crawl (1980)

Never listened to The Beat but ChatGPT recommended them when looking for more ska bands and I’m so glad it did. The perfect blend of old school ska and punk grit..

Kempsey:

Ghost  - Satanized (2025)
I’ve had this on repeat so many times! I’m just so excited with Ghost’s new direction and era making a grand entrance for Papa Perpetua. The visuals that have been released for Satanized hint at so much. I’m gonna be so hyped for when Skeletá comes out!

Lights - ALIVE AGAIN (2025)
Another Fresh track recently released. I can’t stop coming across it, my algorithm on social media imprisons the song. But I can’t complain when it’s such a sad girl bop!

Halsey - Ego (2024)
I don’t know how I’ve slept on this album but this track really calls to me! A must repeat in my personal lists!

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan - We Know (Hamilton OST) (2015)
Think my guilty pleasures are slipping through the cracks but after finally seeing Hamilton live, it really made me appreciate it more.

Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings (1995)
My best friend has had this on repeat so by proxy, it has infected my playlists and algorithms, again it’s way too catchy to escape!

Sabrina Carpenter - Taste (2024)
I love Sabrina’s openness and even pettiness in her songwriting, its real and relatable to an extent with cheeky exaggerations. Very catchy and singable track that really brings back the “Girls just want to have fun” feel. I love it.

Biffy Clyro - Medicine (2016)

Billies Eillish - bad guy (2019)

Don’t Bring Me Down - Black Stone Cherry (2020)

YUNGLUD - Memories (with WILLOW) (2022)

Biffy Clyro - Biblical (2013)

Tyler:

P.H.F - Glue (2018)

We’re starting off March with a fun, bedroom-punk sound from Tāmaki Makaurau and John Locke. With an eclectic and unique mix of sounds that crescendo into a catchy chorus, it’s easy to see why P.H.F is on the rise with tracks like Glue in their arsenal. The guitar riff that drives the song, punctuated by a synth sound I can only describe as “whiny”, has been caught in my head for days. Check it out.

Peter Cat Recording Co. - Memory Box (2019)

Up next is a mellower track from Peter Cat Recording Co. - an India-based rock band with a clear vision - to create the sound of the radio station of the future. I find “rock” to be an interesting genre for them to categorise themselves under, as the little I have checked out of their discography reveals a myriad of influences woven together into an incredible sound.

Memory Box is an 8 minute journey that captures the best of Funk, J-Pop and even some of that Daft Punk sound. I’ve been really impressed with this band, and with work that stretches back to 2010, they’re definitely worth a closer look if this track surprises you too.

Tatsuro Yamashita - ノスタルジア・オブ・アイランド (1978)

Tatsu Yamashita is widely attributed as a pioneer of the city-pop sound, but from the start this song takes a gentler tone. The iconic, 80’s synths are still there, but they drone out alongside the gentle waves and a powerful bass. There’s a peaceful but bittersweet atmosphere in this track that I love, and if you put this together with the last track you have a good 15ishminutes of awesome music to start a new playlist.

JPEGMAFIA - either on or off the drugs (2024)

JPEGMAFIA is an artist I never really found myself listening to over the past few years, but this track has been a standout for me as I’ve been exploring his work. With an incredible flow and dense lyrics, it could be hard for one to focus on the incredible production on the beat, also done by the man himself. The sample at the core of the song is actually taken from some strange, AI song. Moral questions inside, this is a 10/10 track that has got me hooked on JPEGMAFIA - give it a listen.

Mk.gee - Are You Looking Up (2024)

Another recent release, Micheal Todd Gordon is an American Singer-songwriter who has seen great success with his 2024 debut album ‘Two Star & the Dream Police’. This is my favourite track from the album, a ballad that channels the indie/math rock sounds of so many of some of today’s most original artists. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from “mc-gee”, hopefully this recommendation will encourage you to do the same.
