Single Review: Wilko Wilkes - ABCDEpression
While typically Wilko’s style of music is not one I would levitate towards with age has come the maturity to realise that music can be good even if it not necessarily my personal preference.
ABCDEpression delves into the thankfully no longer taboo subject of mental health, expressing all the ways in which mental illness can consume a person and how one struggle can completely contradict another. The lyrics are thoughtful and the way they are delivered using each letter of the alphabet to introduce a symptom or thought process shows just how many ways a person can suffer. I particularly enjoyed the X line citing that we know this is for xylophone, the injection of some humour goes some way towards dispelling the belief that a person with mental illness is always unhappy and never laughs.
Musically ABCDEpression is an interesting mix that’s not quite rap but more rhythmic than spoken word, it has a home produced vibe which I really like. It’s clear that Wilko means and feels every word he’s saying with a raw passion that would likely be lost if the record was more produced and polished.
Overall ABCDEpression deals with a sensitive topic with compassion and intelligence. While musically it’s not normally my preference it's well put together and I’m pretty sure those who like this style of music will really enjoy it!
