SINGLE REVIEW: Moreish Idols - Between These Ears
New release from South London’s Moreish Idols 'Between the Lines' is a chaotic listen.
Sinister, nervous energy proceeds to lucid, slightly disorganised indie with a nice jangle topped with arty, somewhat surreal vocals that borrow from post punk. It almost feels entirely improvised, with each instrument doing what it likes as the semi spoken vocals bleed in the foreground. It's melodic, but without structure. An alternative banger but without any element of catchiness. It's a challenging listen whilst also being an infectious piece of originality.
Fun drum beats laced with sunshine vibes, pleasing saxophones and hazy guitars, 'Between These Ears' builds for its finale into a grand, chaotic influx of disarray and confusion.
The lyrics take a look at the feelings of being stuck in a middle ground. Like you don't belong anywhere, your life doesn't quite align to everyone else's. Observing "social butterflies'' whilst being stranded in a questioning mind. Wondering if you're using people "or are they just a helping hand" in your quest for fulfilment. It rages with the idea of being true to yourself however chaotic life might feel, not changing just to fit in a certain niche; "don't fake it trying to be someone you're not". "Between These Ears" is the thought process of someone unsure if they're understanding the point or are missing it completely. It's a confused, uncertain lyric that fits its erratic backdrop perfectly.
I'll admit 'Between These Ears' was a slow burner, on first listen I just found it noisy but it's a track that needs your focus, you need to understand what it's about before you can fully appreciate how good it really is.
