Canada's Lost in Japan gives us a track that can take on any meaning with their new single 'From the Start'.
The band's vision was to create a narrative the listener could apply to any aspect or situation within their own circumstances. Be it a failed relationship, dismay at life, the trials and tribulations of career progression or even a musician trying to make their way in the cut throat music industry.
The lyrics shift from moments of happiness "on the way up" to confusion of having no direction, feeling like you're losing at something but not knowing what; "I don't know what I'm doing", "I don't know what I'm losing". Its track of confusion and dilemma that could easily apply to almost anything. Holding on to something we should really let go of, being lost in the chaos of a questioning mind. It's a journey through life's highs and lows. 'From the Start' is a relevant and relatable lyric wrapped in an infectiously likeable shell.
Bluesy, groovy with captivating vocals with a super catchy chorus. It's plodding and reflective but exciting with just a spark of playfulness. The uptempo chords are backed with upbeat drums and occasional moments of epic riffs. It’s thoughtful with a fun demeanour. The type of song you could put on to pay attention to the meaning but could just as easily take it at face value, enjoy its lighthearted energy and have a good old bop.
'From the Start' is a clever track allowing the listener to make it their own, take as much or as little as they like from it. Use it to feel good or use it to channel their bewilderment at whatever situation the lyrics fit best. Lyrically fascinating and musically creative, I'm a big fan.
