'Peter' - First Play on Triple J Unearthed TOPS

"A woft of nostalgia hits you unapologetically as soon as you press play on this single from Scratching! <3 It feels so loaded and grand in a really vintage way - overall so beautiful!"
4.5 / 5 (Anika Luna, Triple J) [About 'Peter']

"'Peter' is a triumphant, atmospheric cut, pairing piano passages with big acoustic guitar strums and a steady rhythm section, while shimmering synths swirl in the mix around Grace’s striking, melodic vocals." (Pilerats) [About 'Peter']

"Such an interesting song. It's like electro, synthy pop goes punk. It's glitchy chaos, sophisticated and a little badass"

4 / 5 (Claire Mooney, Triple J) [About 'Anymore']

"Still feeling the after effects of Grace Sanders' latest - pulse elevated and nerves on edge, this is pacey and alive."

4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J Unearthed) [About 'Anymore']

"It’s an intimate record, with all the feels that you would expect from these events, but it doesn’t dwell in minor keys and hang-dog sadness." (AU Review)

"‘Scrolling’, although forlorn, is musically forward-facing. It takes its cues from the prevailing hyper-pop movement, a kind of pop music that .. absorbs and propagates the prominent communication methods of the early 2020s."

Stream 'Peter'

Perth's Grace Sanders and creative partner Ezekiel Padmanabham pave the way for a new chapter with single 'Peter' under their new moniker, Scratching. Out on Friday, October 27, 'Peter' sees the duo reinventing themselves as they blur the lines between folk, pop and electronic music.

In the past few years, Grace Sanders –alongside Ezekiel Padmanabham– has released two EPs - 'GUMS' in 2021 and 'nothing is personal' in 2022. Their fruitful collaboration has not only garnered critical acclaim but also led to extensive support tours and shows alongside esteemed artists, including KUCKA, Boo Seeka, Great Gable, Katy Steele, Winston Surfshirt, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

The releases saw a huge range of support from the likes of Triple J, Double J and tracks on rotation over at Triple J Unearthed. Racking up tens of thousands of plays on streaming services and playlisted on Spotify's Fresh Finds AU & NZ, omw and more, as well as playlisting on Apple Music and support from Tone Deaf, NME, Pilerats, AU Review and many more.

Now, Scratching has Sanders and Padmanabham breathing new life into their performances and recorded works, characterized by an infectious spirit of experimentation and playfulness.

Debuting under their new banner, 'Peter' is an entrancing composition that embodies a dreamlike quality, elegantly melding elements of electronic, folk and pop music. Adorned with a backdrop of delicate piano, acoustic guitar, transcendent synths and gospel-inspired chord progressions, 'Peter' delivers a hypnotic and graceful listening experience. The track exudes a melancholic yet soothing atmosphere, guided by Sanders' poised vocals, that whisks away from the earthy instrumental composition.

'Peter' draws its inspiration from the timeless tale of Peter Pan, delving into the longing for eternal youth and the blissful ignorance it entails. The song serves as a poignant reminder to embrace every facet of oneself, both light and dark, with unconditional love and acceptance. Grace Sanders speaks on the evolution of the track:

"This song was initially written as a poem and was inspired by old soundtracks from musicals such as The Sound of Music and the woeful crooning of singers such as Doris Day, Skeeter Davis and the Mellowmen. We wanted to create something floaty and dreamlike that referenced that feeling of dissociation within the naive optimism of music from the 50s/60s. The song later became much more influenced by artists such as Lana del Rey and beach house as we put our own modern spin to those initial references and discovered how the story wanted to be told.

The release of 'Peter' is just the beginning of what's to come from this innovative duo. Get swept away to Neverland with Scratching when 'Peter' is released everywhere on Friday, October 27.
