'Milk-punk' band KickBoy release the anti-party dance track ‘Anxious Party People’ - out now!
Bristol-born and London-polished, KickBoy is booting their new track “Anxious Party People” out onto streaming platforms on the 29th of February. This is the second single from their debut EP, “Ick Boy”, set for release in May.
Anxious Party People is KickBoy’s anti-party dance track. Disco synth and a funky bassline deliver an
introspective piece about social anxiety, alcoholism and denial.
The single was recorded with Conor Kearney (Home Counties - Alcopop!/Subcat Records) at his studio in
London. The collaboration stemmed from their shared taste for eclecticism and genre-dodging.
About the Track
Viagra Boys, The B-52’s and The Garden: these bass-driven synth-punk titans commune where “Anxious Party People” resides.
Jamie was inspired to write this track while still fresh to the relentless busyness of London life. It describes a dilemma familiar to many making their homes in the capital: insecurity pushes us to socialise in spite of our wellbeing with contributions from worsening alcohol addictions. The upbeat thrust of the song masks the speaker’s anxiety and exhaustion as they try to mould themselves to a culture of communal denialism. All this culminates in a tongue-in-cheek breakthrough. At the song’s climax, as the
instruments tumult into frenzied symphony, our speaker embraces the collective philosophy; this is exactly where they’re supposed to be. After all, we’re all in this together.
The track ingurgitated the goofy and unpredictable flourishes of KickBoy’s live performances during its production. Its sardonic lyrics sway sweatily between the synth, guitar and saxophone solos to a ceaseless, forceful rhythm.
Ick Boy - The EP
Anxious Party People is the second in a series of 5 tracks to expect from the South London ‘milk-punk’ unit’s debut EP.
“Ick Boy” rejects the musical rulebook and favours chaos as a theme; it cannot be labelled any more concisely than ‘disco/funk-influenced egg-punk/garage-rock’. The subject matters align but never meet, scattered across cultural gentrification, the climate crisis, mental health and even dating ‘icks’. As they skip along the entangled frontiers of late-stage capitalism, these tracks are solely united by KickBoy’s chaotic humour, eccentric lyricism and genre-defiance.
KickBoy - The Band
The three eponymous ‘Boys’ - Jamie, Owen and Chris - have been joined by two new members since KickBoy’s rebirth in England’s second most exciting city. Jules and Connie are now a firm presence in the band’s raucous live shows; their guitar, synth and saxophone bringing welcome depths to the band’s grungy underpinnings. Fans might find it hard to classify the genre that emerges from this cocktail - egg-punk? garage-funk? disco-junk? - but KickBoy songs remain deliciously rooted in the heady chaos, frivolous freneticism and cheerful nihilism that typified its early days.
