Hull lo-fi indie pop newcomers Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels are pleased to reveal their new single ‘Dog Dirt’, released 24th January 2025.
The track is the latest to be taken from their new album The Optometrist which will be released on 14th February 2025 via Inedible Records, with the band also revealing the artwork, tracklist, and preorders today.
A current twist on a childish taunt, ‘Dog Dirt’s punchy guitars, catchy hooks, and snarled vocals are straight out of the power pop playbook—a no-nonsense, melody driven 3 minute tantrum, the new single is a modern day anthem for anybody who’s sick of being lied to and gaslit by people who should know better.
Commenting on the track, front man Matt Edible says: "We’re increasingly living in a world where it seems to be commonplace that people with power and wealth can just lie and talk down to us. And somehow that’s become acceptable. I’ve not got a solution to this problem but I’ve got every right to moan about it. That’s what Dog Dirt is - a childish whinge about how rotten it is - ‘It’s not fair!’”
Recorded during lockdown alongside new additions John Andrew (Kingmaker) on drums, and Sarah Shiels on bass, forthcoming album The Optometrist is a thrilling new collection of material from the Yorkshire cult hero.
“I couldn’t help being influenced by what was going on in the world at the time but that manifested itself in quite a variety of ways,” says Edible of the new album. “It takes a few shots at corrupt leaders and phoney celebrities who seemed to be making the most of what was going on, but it also revels in the human condition and how humanity is bigger than all of the negative influence we are constantly bombarded with. Of course, there are also songs about existential dread, a couple of bands from Manchester, and a pair of really awesome boots!”
Across the course of its varied 9 tracks, The Optometrist reveals itself as a beautiful pick n mix of a record that revels in creating pockets of joy with each track; little self-contained universes that shimmer and throb with their own cultural touchstones and unique atmospheres. Like all of the best songwriters, Edible seems at ease wherever he turns his hand, and his unmistakable signature is written through the album like a stick of seaside rock.
Soulful lead single ‘Triage’ and tongue-in-cheek follow up ‘Better Than Oasis’ were released earlier this year, picking up spins from John Kennedy at Radio X, BBC Radio York, BBC Radio Humberside, and Amazing Radio, with the trio also playing a special BBC introducing live session for Jericho Keys.
The band appeared at Truck Festival and Hull’s flagship Humber Street Sesh this summer, recently supporting The Bug Club on a hometown appearance, with select live dates on sale now (see below for listings).
They will be announcing further live dates over the coming months.

More info:
Matt Edible has been a jewel in the crown of Hull’s music scene for many years and alongside his new outfit The Obtuse Angels is producing the most vital music of his career.
From fronting cult avant-pop heroes Edible 5ft Smiths to leading BBC 6music’s Tom Robinson favourites The Holy Orders, he has consistently produced memorable and captivating music—now, Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels feels like the inevitable denouement of his journey so far.
Their debut album Stairgazing (2018) featured the lush production and multi-instrumentation of Joe Bennett (Goldrush/St. Etienne), the drumming skills of Mike Monaghan (Gaz Coombes/Willie J Healey) and contained a wide variety of material ranging from the sublime, swooping, sweary love song ‘Astronauts’ to the anthemic indie earworm ‘Nightclubbing’.
It also showcased a love of a wide range of styles from post-rock to Americana, leading to the American alt-legend Josh T. Pearson to proclaim Edible as “the best thing out of Hull since the Humber Bridge!”
