“’’I Forget’ is vivacious…drifting, almost psychedelic in tone, its lysergic qualities have a dream-like, almost Lynchian quality to them.” - Clash

Following the announcement of his new album Chaos Magic (due for release November 17th via Weird World) and the release of the searing synth-led lead single “I Forget”, today Jaakko Eino Kalevi releases new track “Palace In My Head”, featuring vocals from French actress and singer Alma Jodorowsky.

A chance introduction by a mutual friend in Jaakko’s new home of Athens led to the wonderful collaboration with Alma. Writing the lyrics together for the exotic electro-pop track “was all very spontaneous and easy,” says Jaakko. “I had an early demo of this for many years on my computer and didn’t know how to finish it. I re-recorded it in the studio and luckily got Alma to help me finish the chorus part. The chorus and verse are from different worlds, in my opinion. The verse is very dramatic and dark and then the chorus is bright and comforting.”

Alongside the track, Jaakko also releases an accompanying video, directed by Alma and starring both Jaakko and Alma. Its celestial, vintage aesthetic was captured through an old Bolex camera – shot by cinematographer Sean Price Williams (Good Time, The Sweet East) – adding to the illusion that the couple are in a dream-like, otherworldly state. "Knowing that we wanted to shoot the video in Athens, where Jaakko and I met, I had this idea of our ghosts missing on each other and leading the viewers to these beautiful Greek landscapes,” Alma comments. “This parallel world, just like a dream, is like an incarnation of the creative mind of us two musicians. It resonates with the lyrics of the song that of course inspired me, evoking mind palaces and the border between fiction and reality.”

Largely written and recorded in his new home of Athens, Chaos Magic plots a thrilling course through the Jaakko universe, drawing on cosmic jazz, dub reggae, neon synthpop, tender ballads and space-rock nirvana. It features musical contributions from Jimi Tenor, Faux Real, Yu-Ching Huang and John Moods.

Stylistically, the album covers a lot of ground, from the ice-cool new-wave of “I Forget” and delirium of “Dino’s Deo” to the evocative disco of “Galactic Romance” and “Night Walk”. Taking shape over the past two years, initial demos for the album were made at various spots across Europe – at artist residencies in Geneva and Maajaam, Estonia, and in studios in Berlin and the Greek island of Hydra – before being developed in Athens at Mutual Sound Studios, a place close to Jaakko’s heart, run by his friend Teemu Takatalo, whoco-produced and mixed Chaos Magic alongside Jaakko.

An album very much founded in the beauty of collaboration and, in Jaakko’s words, “a ‘back to the roots’ album”, Chaos Magic “is a collection of songs from a certain period without trying to tie them together”. Inspired by his new home and the Greek word kháos, “meaning an abyss or void that was created when Earth and Heaven were separated”, the eclectic, wondrous sounds of the album find beauty in the chaotic nature of the everyday.
