Gran Fenwick releases single ‘Forever’

A year after its release, Gran Fenwick’s “Sucks To Be You” became #1 for the entire month of January 2024 on the New Music Top 40 on Peterborough’s Pet Rock Radio. “Sucks To Be You” also charted on This Is Only Rock Radio in Spain for three weeks. Gran Fenwick’s first LP, Cancon Classics, was recognized as Earshot Distro’s pick of the month.

Having received enthusiastic thumbs up for all of his interpretations from the original artists (including Barenaked Ladies, Prozzak, Sloan, Metric, By Divine Right, and Klaatu, among others), Ian Strung turned his attention to the next phase of his Gran Fenwick project.

Ontario indie artist Jess Roveda’s three e.p.s became personal favourites of Ian’s after seeing her open for Nairolf (another prior guest of the Cancon Classx radio show). Jess Roveda’s music conveyed the energy of 90s britpop and dance filtered through a lively robot-girl giving a peace sign who was born around the time of the music she was referencing. She sounded like 1997, which was exactly when Ian was in high school and learning guitar.

Ian: “‘Forever’ sounded like a musical standard, a universal message of acceptance and moving on that anyone could relate to. I started imagining a Gran Fenwick version and quickly moved ahead with recording it.” There are now acoustic guitars, burbling synths, a huge bassline, and choral vocals. Gran Fenwick’s version of “Forever” isn’t belted out. It’s sung quietly, in the middle of the night, in a heightened emotional state similar to “Up On Cripple Creek” from Cancon Classics.”
The video was directed by “Blue Suit Ron” Ron Baker of Sloan lore and features Ian in his natural habitat: downtown Toronto and Scarborough in the winter. This is an ode to the GTA that was edited by local singer-songwriter and video director Joe Cash. The analog visuals match the brand new website designed by Ian’s wife, Karina Shum (https://www.ianstrung.com). This website brings together the Cancon Classx spots, which are now available as YouTube videos, Gran Fenwick, and Cold Dead Hands CA, the power rock band that contains Ian’s original music.

Gran Fenwick plays the Painted Lady April 5th, 2025 with Mip Power Trio for the Cancon Classx 100th episode and Mip Power Trio "Too Bad" single release party.
