Fiona-Lee releases debut EP ‘Nothing Compares To Nineteen’, out now via Gravity / Capitol Records.
Tackling themes of vulnerability, shame and grief in her music, the Yorkshire native’s powerful songwriting and anthemic overtones have been showcased throughout lead singles ‘Mother’, ‘When I Wake Up I’m Sad’, ‘To Make Me Feel Good’ and title-track ‘Nothing Compares To Nineteen’. Citing influence from Jeff Buckley, Alanis Morissette, PJ Harvey and Patti Smith in developing her unique sound, Fiona-Lee collaborated with The Maccabees’ / 86TV’s Hugo White on production duties (for several EP tracks), and Alan Moulder (The Last Dinner Party, Wet Leg) on the mix of lead single 'Mother', all leading to considerable early success for the musician.
Lauded across the press landscape via key titles including The Telegraph, DIY Magazine, Dork Magazine, Rolling Stone UK, Clash Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit and Under The Radar, Fiona-Lee’s live prowess has also developed at an impressive rate; following a winter tour support with The Amazons and an acclaimed show at Eurosonic, the newcomer is primed to announce more live activity for the summer. Meanwhile on the airwaves, the indie riser has already landed several standout BBC 6 Music features (Steve Lamacq - The Great Escape special, Amy Lamé -‘Sunday Girl’ and Huw Stephens - ‘Huw Are You’), a BBC Radio 4 ‘Woman’s Hour’ appearance and BBC Radio 1 (Nels Hylton, Sian Eleri) spins, as her remarkable storytelling and crunching indie sensibilities resonate with audiences far and wide.
Speaking ahead of her EP’s arrival, Fiona-Lee explained: “This EP is about the period of my life from adolescence to adulthood and the uncomfortable experiences that shaped me into who I am today. The title is from the track ‘Nothing Compares To Nineteen’, a statement saying “all these difficult things you face when you’re becoming an adult are so hard - but the most impactful and really tragic thing happened when I was 19, and that was losing a friend to suicide”. Now, looking back with perspective, it’s a lot to do with self-love and soothing; standing up for yourself and feeling empowered whilst also asking for help and recognising we all fuck up and that’s okay. The growing pains are what teaches you to be honest with yourself and how you really feel.
