EP REVIEW: Sam Bell - Thoughts Of A Broken Man
Known for his incredible performances, compositions, and grand technical skills as a guitarist, anchoring himself in both Indigo House & Ommis as a lead guitar player, Sam Bell is a man of passion with his works, very articulate and precise with his solo playing yet a very humble character. His 5 track debut EP, Thoughts of a Broken Man, reflects his narrative bringing all his ambitions to fruition by exploring all new depths and styles in his solo project.
Ain't Welcome No More - This track opens with acoustic guitar, low, rich bass, and electric guitar accompanying to create a sense of unease and mystery. Sam's vocals make quite a gritty and suspenseful entrance, singing a timeless blues-country narrative with a modern twist, describing betrayal, heartache, and devilish karma.
I love the abrupt jagged staccato and swing of the guitar and the warm walking bassline that keeps the track moving, almost like the slow movement of horseback. This track paints an outlaw riding away in the sunset after the ordeal.
The second track, Moonbeam Butterfly, takes quite a free, relaxed approach - Vocals are gentler, accompanied by subtle backing vocals and orchestral strings fulfilling that romantic aura. The guitar takes the spotlight, bending and waving like a breath of fresh air. An overall serene and singable track with catchy choruses. Followed by Step Inside My Mind, a vulnerable, airy instrumental track, and break in the EP. This is a musical representation of Sam's mind. There's serene creativity that is waiting to flow out.
The strongest song on this EP is Lonely Dream. Vocals and guitar are the only instruments in this track, with airy reverb creating lots of space, presenting the artist's talents like a trophy cabinet. It's a very bittersweet song reminiscing on past memories.
The final track, My Baby Left Me, returns to the upbeat blues-country swing, a playful and repetitive track focusing on light politics and work-life hardships. A very addictive song; I particularly like the articulation of the lyric "Goodnight" It's so satisfying and ends the track quite well. Even the little outro riff creates quite a cheeky ending.
Overall, Thoughts Of A Broken Man is a brilliant introduction to Sam Bell as an artist, writer, and composer. I admire the genuine emotion and talents put into this EP, an outstanding achievement to write, record and produce this all independently. The EP abruptly ends, and my ears have been left unresolved; however, it will leave me and many other consumers wanting more.
