Falling into moments of unforeseen, buoyant melodic abandon, Cut Glass Kings return for a New Year and a new album with their latest single, Big Dreams. One of a succession of singles and leaks from their upcoming second album, From A Distant Place, released on Run On Records (The Coral, The Royston Club) next month, the single comes at the same time as the band announces a run of nine UK Tour Dates.
Formed of driven, self-producing two-piece, Paul Cross (guitars/vocals) and Greg McMurray (drums), Cut Glass Kings return to the road with an opening night in London, playing at The Black Heart on Fri 14 February 2025.
Upsetting expectations, the long-standing pair, initially emerging from the English Midlands a decade ago, bring the album’s opening track, Big Dreams to the table as a flag-bearing example of their advanced artistry. Bursting out with their 2019, James Skelly co-produced, self-titled album, Cut Glass Kings embarked on a delinquent adventure with no intended end.
While Big Dreams exposes the smudged, haphazard lines within which the band operates, it also reveals a maturing band able to turn the potential of mayhem into something real and beautiful.
Cross says of the single: “This was a kind of a happy accident. The way my guitar had been leaning on the wall tuned the high E string down so, when I played a normal chord, it sounded amazing. I just had a burst of inspiration and Track One was finished in five minutes”
“Paul wasn’t sure it would suit us at first,” McMurray adds. “It sounded a bit Fontaines D.C. Everything about the recording was so wrong it was right. ‘I’ve got big dreams in my head’ is a really simple lyric, but it feels fitting that it’s the first line of the album.”
Cut Glass Kings’ last live outings took place in 2022, when they supported The Coral on their nationwide tour. Having diverted their attentions to crafting their 11, new songs in the studio since, the band returns to play the following dates next month and into March:
Fri 14 Feb – London, The Black Heart
Sat 15 Feb – Huddersfield, Dive Bar
Fri 21 Feb – Birmingham, Actress and Bishop
Sat 22 Feb – Halifax, Grayston
Thu 27 Feb – Liverpool, Kazimier Stockroom
Fri 28 Feb – Blackpool, Bootleg Social
Sat 8 Mar - Cardiff, The Moon
Fri 21 Mar – Glasgow, McHuill's
Sat 22 Mar – Barrow, Underground
The release of Big Dreams comes just a month ahead of the band’s album, which comes out on Fri 21 February 2025 on vinyl, CD and digital formats.
Having showcased the album’s first single, At The Borderline, in October, fans encountered a refreshed Cut Glass Kings, with Cross and McMurray quoting a listening list of influences including Eels, John Grant, Ty Segall and Timber Timbre. Eagle-eared followers were treated to successive leaks from the album over last summer, including Gift Horse, the glammy Thick As Thieves and the ethereal ELO-like slow burn of Flying Saucer.
From A Distant Place was mixed by James Skelly and Chris Taylor (The Coral, Blossoms, Courteeners) at Liverpool’s Kempston Street Studios, after McMurray and Cross had self-recorded tracks using a vintage Tascam 388 tape machine, bought in a Devonian car park for cash, in their cellar studio.
Originally formed near Birmingham in the early 2010’s as a three-piece, Cut Glass Kings as a streamlined two-piece began their creative friendship with Skelly and the city of Liverpool following a gig at Seel Street’s Zanzibar in 2014. The title track of their debut EP, released on Skeleton Key Records in 2017, Shadow Of Your Love, has gone on to gather almost five million streams on Spotify.
